The Next NebuAd

What happens when you put together SANDVINE, NEBUAD, GOOGLE and PINOCCHIO?

Alcatel-Lucent may someday show us.

Yesterday THE COMPANY’S NEW MANAGEMENT made PUBLIC their NEW DIRECTION.

IS THIS what the former BELL LABS is MORPHING INTO - peddlers of controversial BEHAVIORAL ADVERTISING, SURVEILLANCE, SPYWARE, DATAMINING, and DEEP PACKET INSPECTION technology?

Here’s what the Kindsight project (aka: Project Rialto) has to say ABOUT itself:

Kindsight is a value-added services provider specializing in network-based security solutions for residential internet use. We deliver an always-on, always-up-to-date security service embedded in internet service providers networks to address what we call the “flawed malware defense cycle.” Our solution has industry-leading network intrusion and threat detection capability that complements today’s consumer (i.e. PC/Mac based) security offerings.

I call this this an excuse to plant deep-packet inspection devices in ISPs’ central offices, and subscribers’ homes, while trying to scare us into thinking THIS STUFF is something useful and benign:

Kindsights technology delivers increased levels of protection by notifying users of the presence of malware within an ISP subscriber’s home network. Todays multi-PC home environments are ideal for hackers to attack since it’s arduous to keep anti-virus and anti-spyware applications and firewalls up-to-date on every computer.  It only takes one missed update to enable a significant vulnerability with the users data. And once present, many of today’s malware will disable the security application from requesting future updates thus allowing the threat to continue to persist.

EMBARQ’S NEBUAD DRIVEN COOKIE BASED OPT OUT made hollow claims that the subscriber can shut it off.  NOTHING CAN BE FARTHER FROM THE TRUTH. The same may be true here:

By comparison, Kindsight determines the presence of malware by monitoring network traffic emanating from the residential high-speed line [by spying on us. ed]. Since the solution is in the network, it can only be turned off by the subscribers actions, and is continually kept up-to-date by Kindsight [I think they mean MOTIVE, another Alcatel-Lucent company. ed.] and the participating ISP.

The next blurb mentions paid for by advertising.

HOW CAN THEY DO THAT

With BEHAVIORAL TARGETING - collecting and READING ALL OUR OUTBOUND DATA, by BREAKING INTERNET STANDARDS, ignoring SECURITY AND PRIVACY and INJECTING PACKETS of data back to us, possibly illegally, and without our assent, consent or knowledge:

The Kindsight service, as with other free on-line applications such as search engines and map functions, is funded through an advertising mechanism but WITHOUT THE USE OF COOKIES, pop-ups or spam. Instead, we deliver ads on sites that are of interest to the subscriber base. To the consumer, this experience will be very similar to how some of the major search engines operate today. However, the Kindsight solution is built around PRIVACY PRACTICES that surpass those IMPLEMENTED TODAY by today’s leading online application providers.

Kindsight was created through a spin-out from Alcatel-Lucent (ALU). Formerly known as PROJECT RIALTO, Kindsight is led by an experienced management team with expertise and deep relationships from the networking, security and online applications domains.

Kindsight has development centers in Sunnyvale, California and Ottawa, Ontario.

Last year Kindsight called themselves PROJECT RIALTO while their web DATA MINER was found sneaking around the internet.

Now it looks like Alcatel-Lucent’s new venture may be on the same path as NEBUAD’S FAILED BUSINESS.

NebuAd and Sandvine are two companies that make equipment designed to erode internet privacy and usurp security to the umpteenth degree.  But at least they have the dignity to put their own name on their own products. The people at Alcatel-Lucent with their secret product and stealth names FAIL TO ANSWER journalists’ questions:

Front Porch offers ISPs a service similar to NebuAd’s, but it reaches little more than 100,000 US net surfers. Other operations that appear to be working on similar services include Adzilla and Project Rialto, a “stealth company” created by Alcatel-Lucent, but these firms did not respond to our interview requests.

I want the OLD BELL LABS back.

In memory of the layed off workers of AT&T

Today's Diversion

Science is not only compatible with spirituality; it is a profound source of spirituality. When we recognize our place in an immensity of light-years and in the passage of ages, when we grasp the intricacy, beauty, and subtlety of life, then that soaring feeling, that sense of elation and humility combined, is surely spiritual. So are our emotions in the the presence of great art or music or literature, or of acts of exemplary selfless courage such as those of Mohandas Gandhi or Martin Luther King, Jr. - Carl Sagan
